Banks from the UK and the US will soon stop serving customers in Italy. The new EU rules require them to open branches within the Union or operate through subsidiaries.

Many foreigners keep accounts in their home country for taxes, property rentals or pension payments. If the bank considers the costs unjustified, it will simply close the account without warning. Even those who opened the deposit before moving are threatened.

The deadline for the law is early 2027, but letters from banks are already coming in. One way out is to use online services like Wise or Revolut, which give both a European and a foreign account number.
