Issue No. 224
Italy has allowed citizenship to be restored to those who lost it to a foreign-born parent.
Italy's Supreme Court ruled that children of dual citizens do not lose Italian citizenship, even if the parent later became a foreigner. The decision applies to those born in countries with the right of jus soli (USA, Brazil) and whose applications were previously rejected under the “infant rule”.
The Italian Interior Ministry has issued new instructions: such applicants can review their original case without re-submitting documents. Whether 15% of potential citizens help or not, the courts will decide in each case.
