🇵🇹Portugal Issue No. 169

37 hectares of a Portuguese island with a working fish farm go under the hammer for 750 thousand euros

It's not just a piece of land in the middle of a lagoon. A whole functioning business is put up for auction: salt ponds, oyster farms, fishing areas, residential buildings, a pier and even equipment (tractor, crane, 600 oyster beds, 2000 nets).

The island in Ria de Aveiro was bought 15 years ago by a group of investors from Aveiro. They restored abandoned salt ponds and launched production of salt, halophyte and oysters. Now it is sold as a fully operational complex with aquaculture licenses.

The whole area is part of the European network of protected areas Natura 2000. This means that any new projects, whether tourism or development, will require environmental expertise. But it is this status that can attract someone who is looking for a place for sustainable agrotourism or a conservation project.

The auction runs until August.
