Issue No. 303
Italy's long-term residency rules for Americans
After 5 years of continuous residence in Italy, eligible applicants may seek EU long-term resident status, subject to further conditions. Citizenship is a separate process that can take longer. Long-term residence offers more secure access to work and social benefits, but it does not confer all the rights of Italian citizenship.
Applicants should check the rules on absences during the preceding 5 years, demonstrate A2 Italian-language proficiency and meet an income threshold of more than €7000 a year for a single applicant. The source discusses the requirements and exceptions in more detail.
