Key changes concern the expulsion of parents of Portuguese citizens and the detention of children. Now the deportation of foreigners with children is possible only by the decision of the authorities, taking into account the interests of the child. The protection threshold for children born in the country has also been revised: automatic protection is no longer valid after five years of residence.

The period of forced stay in the centers was increased to 360 days in the absence of cooperation with third countries. Parliament approved the reforms in the summer and they have now officially come into force.
