Among the mountain settlements above Guarda and Caramulla you will find houses built to fight the disease that killed one in three hundred Portuguese.

These buildings are reminiscent of tuberculosis - the white plague - this outbreak, when the urban world was upended and thousands of people suffered from this terrible disease.
