Portuguese trips abroad rise 30% in first quarter of 2026

Residents of Portugal made 923,800 trips abroad in the first quarter of 2026, up 30% year on year, according to INE figures reported by The Portugal News. Total trips reached 5.6 million, up 7%; domestic trips accounted for 4.6 million and grew 3.4%. Visits to family and friends represented 2.4 million trips, or 43.7% of the total, while leisure accounted for 58.9% of trips abroad. Business travel fell 13.5% to 560,100 trips. Booking was involved in 39.4% of all trips and 95.4% of international trips. The average stay was 2.77 nights.
