Alentejo emerges as Europe's answer to the Hamptons
The region, two hours from Lisbon, has transformed from quiet rural backwater into a magnet for international investors. Unspoilt coastline around Comporta and Melides, historic towns such as Évora, and wine-growing estates all appeal to those seeking tranquillity without sacrificing access to quality architecture.
Over the past five years, ambitious residential projects have proliferated here, though not of the resort variety. Developers are creating low-density complexes with bespoke design: natural materials, internal courtyards, panoramic views over countryside or sea. Comporta has become the symbol of this trend, but similar schemes are emerging deeper into the region.
A distinctive feature of the market: most luxury new-builds never appear on public property portals. Buyers work directly with specialists who have access to opportunities at the planning stage. Demand splits between the coastal zone, where it is strongest, and inland areas around Évora, where landowners prize privacy and acreage over sea views.
