1,260 foreign investors lodge complaint over Portuguese citizenship law changes
The majority are holders of golden visas (ARI), who contend that the new rules breach their rights and the expectations they held when obtaining residency status.
The complaint has been filed with the Portuguese ombudsman. The group is represented by ten lawyers. The movement began in May, when investors first approached the courts, but the number of signatories has now reached 1,260.
Madalena Monteiro, founder of Liberty Legal, says she receives daily enquiries from investors of various nationalities prepared to pursue legal action. A second wave of complaints is already in preparation.
The central issue concerns the number of years required to obtain citizenship. Investors argue that the adopted text of the law threatens the rights of thousands of people who have already received or submitted applications for Portuguese citizenship.
