Spain may double waiting period for permanent residency status
The Vox party has proposed extending the residency requirement from five to ten years for foreign nationals seeking long-term residence permits. Under current EU rules, five years of continuous residence in Spain is sufficient to qualify for long-term resident status, which confers enhanced rights, protection from deportation and legal certainty.
Proponents of the initiative believe that an extended residency period would facilitate better integration of foreigners into Spanish society. Critics, however, warn that doubling the timeframe would create uncertainty for individuals already navigating Spanish bureaucracy for years whilst contributing to the economy.
The proposal is currently under parliamentary discussion. Even if approved, implementation would require considerable time, as it must be reconciled with EU legislation, which establishes uniform rules for all member states. At present, the existing conditions remain in force: five years, then applicants may submit their documentation.
