Earthquakes, taxes and connectivity: choosing your region in Italy
Relocating to Italy requires strategy rather than romance. The Local surveyed foreign residents to gather their advice.
Debora from Oregon began by studying seismic activity maps and ruled out high-risk zones. She then identified regions offering a 7 per cent flat tax scheme for small towns (under 20,000 residents). She chose Abruzzo for its central location, allowing easy travel across the peninsula. The result: four years of contentment in the hillside town of Atri.
However, many relocators regret the isolation. One American woman purchased a house in Tuscany on a friend's recommendation, only to discover she needed a car—public transport is limited. Another resident initially considered Todi but withdrew: no trains, the motorway is distant.
Experts are unanimous: do not move to Italy without a trial period. At least one or two months. Live as a local, test the rhythm of life, and assess the availability of shops and services. Avoid the American dream of a villa in the countryside—it is a recipe for loneliness.
First impressions deceive. Visit several times before making your decision.
