Portugal clears backlog: 525,000 cases resolved

After years of chaos in its immigration system, the Portuguese government has announced tangible progress. The AIMA agency and a dedicated task force have processed more than 763,000 citizen appointments, with 473,000 cases resulting in positive decisions.

This is particularly significant for investors and those already living in the country. In 2024, Portugal registered 1.54 million foreign nationals with valid documentation or undergoing regularisation. More than one million of them pay taxes and social security contributions.

Although specialists caution that clearing the backlog does not guarantee swift processing of new applications, it is a clear signal that the system is emerging from emergency mode.
