Sicily's €1 property scheme draws 110,000 applications for 15 homes
Italian municipalities are aggressively disposing of abandoned buildings through symbolic pricing. The mechanism is straightforward: local authorities identify the owner of a semi-derelict property and offer to sell it for €1 rather than bear demolition costs. The buyer assumes responsibility for restoration work within a set timeframe—typically two to three years.
The programme spans coastal regions: from Sassari in Sardinia to the Taranto coast in Apulia, from Gangi in Sicily (named Italy's most beautiful village in 2014) to Cinquefronde in Calabria. In Castglione di Sicilia, situated on the slopes of Mount Etna, 937 of the 1,777 homes in the historic centre stand abandoned—offering them a fresh opportunity.
The programme's success has been so pronounced that Sambuca di Sicilia is now moving to the next phase: homes priced at €2. This is more than a property clearance—it represents a rescue mission for dying villages through tourism and population renewal.
