Balearic reforms begin to increase housing supply
Planning and land-use reforms introduced in the Balearic Islands since 2024 have activated 2,028 additional homes, according to figures reported by local media. Some 516 empty commercial premises have been converted to housing, including 438 in Mallorca, not Málaga.
Other changes allowed larger properties to be divided and unfinished buildings to be completed. A further 903 homes came from land previously reserved for facilities. The additions remain modest beside the islands' housing shortage, but show how existing buildings and underused plots can increase supply without relying solely on new land.
